Budtender Spotlight: Nathan

Name: Nathan

From: Vancouver, Washington. He graduated from Camas High School.

“It’s a great community. I love Vancouver.”

Nathan spent seven years in the Army and attained the rank of Sergeant. He did a tour in Afghanistan and one year in South Korea – where he found an interesting nugget of information:

“In South Korea marijuana is extremely taboo – it actually costs about $1,000 for an eighth.”

Weed history: He started smoking in high school, but stopped while he was in the military. He’s been back and working at The Herbery for about six months and he started when he returned.

“I was a soldier full time, and I took a seven and a half year break,” Nathan said. “Being back, a lot of my knowledge base has come from learning and working here the last six months. I care about this industry and my knowledge base just keeps increasing every day.”

Favorite strains: Nathan loves local Vancouver and Clark County growers, especially Cedar Creek Cannabis.

“Cedar Creek has really good product that I really like,” he said. “I love their OG Kush. It’s super OG gangster status from back in the day. Really hits you in the face and shoulders. Definitely has indica qualities that aren’t for the faint of heart.”

He’s also a big fan of Blueberry Kush from Golden Leaf.

“It’s a great introspective high that lets me sit and veg out,” he said. “They have some of the best outdoor that Washington has to offer, in my opinion. As soon as you open that bag it’s like somebody put a bunch of blueberries in your face.”

Customer support: “I like any and all customers,” Nathan said. “I’m very versatile. I describe things well, and the best way to be with any customer is just to be yourself and have fun. That comes through.”

Weirdest thing about you: “I sing non-stop all day, every day – unless I’m in the middle of stocking,” he said. “I don’t like it when anyone’s in a down mood, so I sing to pick ’em up. Usually I sing along to anything on the radio, or toss on Pandora and I’ll jam!”

Where do you want to be in five years: “I want to be a store manager,” he said. “I’d love to be the face of The Herbery! I also have an instagram page I do a lot of reviews for. In five years I definitely want to be a weed guy in Washington. One day I’d like to own my own store as well, because I’m a businessman.”

Budtender Spotlight: Lynne

Name: Lynne

From: Portland, Oregon, but she’s lived in Vancouver for the past 25 years.

Weed history: “First time I tried it was in high school in like 1973. I started working an ambulance when I was 19, and cannabis became a good soother for the stresses of that job. I’ve been pretty much smoking ever since.”

Favorite strains: “I’m a sativa smoker mostly. I love Doc & Yeti‘s Red Headed Stranger. I also love Cedar Creek’s Jack Herer and Gorilla Glue from Sunshine Farms. Gorilla Glue for me is sort of a sativa hybrid high, although it’s a transition weed. I also like Dream Beaver from Phat Panda.”

Customer support: “Overall I’m probably best with older people – my age – who aren’t always sure what they’re doing. Also people who are coming into either new or are coming back after a long time. I like helping people through the stigma and showing them what’s new.”

Weirdest thing about you: “I collect tacky religious icons. I surround myself with things that bring me joy and make me smile, and I have lots of them. I have a big piece of art of Mary and Jesus up and home that’s probably my favorite. But I love anything with Jesus and sparkles.”

Where do you want to be in five years: “If I’m not retired by then, I’d love to still be here.”

Budtender Spotlight: Ben

Name: Ben

From: Vancouver, Washington – born and raised.

Weed history: “When I was 19 I was hanging out with some friends and my buddy paid me $50 to take a hit! I didn’t get high at the time because I was drunk. But I tried it again the next night because I was curious, and I’ve been smoking off and on ever since.”

“I love that there’s a plant that can do so many different things for so many people – and it grows really quick in so many environments.”

Favorite strains: His favorite sativa is Jack Herer from Cedar Creek Cannabis. He also loves F?#k Yeah from Phat Panda when he’s ready to chill with an indica.

“Jack – I love the creativity and the euphoric head highs. F?#k Yeah I love because it’s awesome video game weed!”

Customer support: “I love working with everybody and anybody who comes in. I’m a big flower guy. I like vapes as well, but I’m pretty new to them and to dabs.”

Weirdest thing about you: “I’m a computer enthusiast, gamer, and I do security work. I teach people how to avoid hacker bots and spyware.”

For video games, he loves the Civilization series – except for the most recent one, and he’s eagerly awaiting the full launch of a game called Star Citizen.

Where do you want to be in five years: “If I’m still in the industry in five years I hope it’s helping to run a store – or to run IT infrastructure for a marijuana business.”

Video Introduction:

Budtender Spotlight: Kaleb

Name: Kaleb

From: Vancouver, Washington – graduate of Mountain View High School!

Weed history: “It started more as a social thing. People here in Vancouver, socially they just got me into it. Now I just like the feeling of it, but I also want to learn more about medicinal properties – especially for veterans.”

Kaleb served in the Marine Corps from 2012 to 2016 and says he loves talking to veterans.

Favorite strains: Kaleb loves Fireline and Phat Panda – especially the F?#k Yeah strain from Phat Panda, he said.

“It brings out my goofy side. Sometimes I seem a little too shy, but that makes me a little social butterfly.”

Customer support: “I love all customers, really. I don’t want to be biased. At first I was afraid to help older people, because they just know so much, but now I’m learning and I just want to help everybody out. I also really like talking to veterans, just because we have so much common ground.”

Weirdest thing about you: “I have a fake front tooth. I have no idea how it happened. I got really drunk for the first time in high school and I blacked out. Boy did I get in trouble with my parents!”

Where do you want to be in five years: “I want to be in the industry, but I want to own my own shop. I’m working on a degree in Business Administration right now at Clark College!”

Video Introduction:

Budtender Spotlight: David

Name: David

From: Born in Virginia Beach, Virginia. David grew up a Navy brat, living in Virginia, Florida, Georgia, and Illinois.

He also served in the Navy from 2005 to 2009 – where he had very noisy sleeping accommodations!

“I did flight deck power and lighting,” David said. “The very front of the ship, where the (planes) catapult in, that’s where my bed was!”

He recently moved to Vancouver, Washington to join the growing cannabis scene.

Weed history: “I’ve been smoking since I was 16, but when I went to Colorado in 2014 – that was the first time I experienced recreational cannabis and it changed everything,” David said. “In Washington and Colorado the stores are huge! Just like the Herbery. And the customer services is great. In Colorado everyone was so helpful, guiding me through everything. I knew that’s what I wanted to do.”

Favorite strains: Pretty much anything from Fireline. “They’re hydroponically grown and pesticide free. They’ve got some of the best variety, best numbers in the store.”

He especially likes Fireline’s Blackberry Chem OG. “It has the best flavor, best color and it came in at 34 percent THC!”

David is also a big fan of Vancouver’s Sunshine Farms. “They have a lot of good variety. Sometimes each of our stores get different strains and I love trying them all.”

Beyond that, he also loves Fairwinds CBD capsules – especially when he’s experiencing back pain and inflammation from some of his old Navy injuries, he said.

Customer support: “I love all of them. I deal with people freshly turned 21 who are looking to go about it responsibly, but I also get 60, 70 year olds doing the same thing. It’s great to show people what modernized cannabis looks like.”

Weirdest thing about you: “I’ve got a 20 pound long haired dachshund at home named Chewbacca Bronson – that’s just his last name, not mine. In the past I had a dog named Charlie Bronson, but I lost him in a relationship. I got Chewbacca at 7 weeks old – and he eats way better than I do!”

Where do you want to be in five years: “This is pretty much where I see myself for the rest of my life. This and maybe another job like a trimmer part time so I can learn more about the industry!”

Video Introduction:

Budtender Spotlight: Brittany

Name: Brittany

From: Vancouver, Washington – and a graduate of Skyview High School.

“Vancouver born and raised!”

Weed history: “I’ve always used it for medicinal reasons – stomach issues. I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis, and I started using tinctures for it and it worked really well. They were trying to give me steroids, but I’ve been treating everything naturally and haven’t had to go on big pharma medication. Cannabis has been a lifesaver for me.”

Favorite strains: Buffalo Bill from Doc & Yeti “Doc & Yeti has the best of everything!”

Flow Gel from Fairwinds Manufacturing. “When muscle stuff starts, I put some of that on and in 10 minutes, I’m ready to go.

She also really likes both the THC and CBD Melonberry tinctures from Fairwinds. “They’re effective and discreet.”

Customer support: “I think I’m good with everybody. The customers I like to talk to most are probably the older generations that maybe are looking for ways to manage pain. They’re sometimes surprised to learn that you can use cannabis and still be in control – it’s not always about a head high.”

“I also love people just getting into cannabis. They’re so great. They’re ready to learn and so excited!”

Weirdest thing about you: “I’m honestly probably a thrill seeker. I’ve tried to conquer my fears.”

To conquer her fear of heights, for instance, she decided to go sky diving, a hobby she now enjoys.

“I love anything that gets your adrenaline pumping. Growing up I had a lot of anxiety, and it’s been great to conquer things I’ve been afraid of.”

Where do you want to be in five years: “I’m actually thinking about going to school for naturopathic and holistic medicine. I’d love to merge cannabis with that sort of practice!”

Video Introduction:

Budtender Spotlight: Jeff

Name: Jeff

From: Chicago, Illinois

“I came to Clark County because I just needed a change of pace. My dad lived out here for the past two years and I decided to come out and join him. I love it – weed’s legal!”

Weed history: “I’ve been smoking since I was about 15, or about 25 years. Now, though, it’s my actual job! I pay taxes, I’m a contributing member of society. It’s great!”

Favorite strains: As a Chicago Bears fan, Jeff’s top strain has to be Bear OG from Cascadia Gardens.

He also loves Adak from Nettles Unlimited. “It has a very nice taste and I like the combination of flavors.”

And he digs Fireline’s new hybrid of White Fire and Pearl Scout Cookies. “It’s an interesting taste, flavor and overall feeling. It centers me.”

Customer support: “I love everybody. I really love helping people – it just makes me feel good.”

Weirdest thing about you: “I have more shoes than most women. I’m a sneaker head. I just got into it. Michael Jordan is huge in Chicago – and I probably have about 60 pairs of Jordan’s in my collection.”

Where do you want to be in five years: “I’d love to still be in this industry and be a bigger contributor to it. I want to learn all facets of it.”

Video Introduction:

Budtender Spotlight: Luke

Name: Luke

From: Battle Ground, Washington

“Born and raised, right here in Clark County!”

Weed history: “Recreationally I’ve been smoking for more than 20 years now. I just got into the industry about a year ago ‘officially’ though.”

“I always loved the idea of working at a weed store – I shopped at The Herbery after legalization and I was so impressed with the team that I wanted to join them. And I was lucky enough to get a job here!”

Favorite strains: Luke is a huge fan of all things Doc & Yeti. His favorite strains:

Buffalo Bill and Red Headed Stranger

“The flavor profiles from Doc & Yeti are fantastic! Buffalo Bill is a nice citrus flavor. I also like the head space. It’s very motivational, allows me to be productive and is great for commuter programming and computer work (which was Luke’s previous career).”

Customer support: “I really enjoy helping folks who are looking for therapeutic effects from cannabis. Whether that’s recreational fun therapy or other therapy, I feel it’s important to meet the customer where they are, help them and let them know they’re being listened to.”

Weirdest thing about you: “I’m a classically trained pianist. I’ve been playing 22 years now. I used to play in a band, but mostly it’s just for personal edification now. ”

Where do you want to be in five years: “I’m working on really bringing technology to the cannabis market in Washington. I have a programming and systems background, and there are a lot of disparate software packages out there that don’t talk to each other. And I want to problem solve and help with that, after my budtending sabbatical.”
