Budtender Spotlight: Corry

Name: Corry

From: Seattle originally, but he’s lived in Vancouver since he was 9 years old.

“I consider myself from Seattle. I like it here though. The people are super nice, and there are nice places around here to hike and camp, too.”

Weed history: “I started smoking with my best friends when I was 15, and I remember learning to hide it from my mom. My friend got a job here at The Herbery and told me how awesome it was – so I got out of the restaurant industry, applied here and got the job!”

Favorite strains: “I love love love Pineapple Express from Nettles. It gets me drawing. I’m a huge artist so I love it.”

He loves sativas in general. “Indicas kind of knock me out.”

He also likes Orange Cream Panda Candies.

“They taste the best,” Corry said.

Customer support: “My favorites are the first timers. They’re afraid of being embarrassed. I can get them hooked up. I also love older couples coming back to it. I just love the excitement of first timers and people who don’t have a lot of experience with it.”

Weirdest thing about you: “If I hear an accent I can’t help but copy it. There’s a cat boarding place next door and the owner has a thick English accent, and I keep picking it up. It’s embarrassing but it’s also funny.”

Where do you want to be in five years: “I see myself traveling, like a nomadic world traveler,” said the 26-year-old. “I’ve been wanting to do that for a while. First place I want to go is Thailand. There’s just something about the art and food there, I think it would be really cool.”

From: Florida (most recently Miami, Florida)

“I was in the military before coming here (to Vancouver),” Rick said, adding that he served 10 years in the Army.

Weed history: “A friend (in the military) had some one day,” Rick said. “I was curious, tried it and liked it, and that’s how I got started. When I got out of the military it became more of a gourmet thing for me. Now I think of it like wine or any other gourmet beverage.”

Favorite strains: OG Kush from Cedar Creek, White Fire from Fireline (“I haven’t been high like that in I don’t know how long,” he says of The Herbery’s newest grower).

He also counts Phat Panda and Doc & Yeti among his favorite growers.

“I really like indoor grown product – the quality is so much better,” he added.

Customer support: “I work with all customers: Young, old, male, female. I relate to everybody.”

His favorite strains are usually indicas, and he loves recommending them to other indica fans, he added.

Weirdest thing about you: “I collect rare antique books,” Rick said.

He’s especially fascinated with metaphysics books, like Cosmic Consciousness by Richard Maurice Bucke, Science of Being by Eugene Fersen, both of which are in his collection.

“I’ve always been curious about metaphysics, esoteric studies,” he said. “Smoking weed and talking about higher states of consciousness is just something I love.”

Where do you want to be in five years: “Hopefully Florida will have legalized by then and I can move back home. I love the Pacific Northwest, but I miss the beaches and sunshine.”

Budtender Spotlight: Mason Davila

Name: Mason Davila

IMG_8446

From: Ontario, Oregon

Weed history: “I’ve been smoking weed for a very, very long time. I think the first time I smoked I snuck into my mom’s room when she was asleep and smoked a roach she had in her ashtray. I’ve been smoking ever since.”

“I ended up here at the Herbery because I went shopping at the main store, loved it, and decided to apply. Now here I am.”

Favorite strains: Anything from Phat Panda, particularly Bubba’s Gift. Also The Holy Grail from Cascadia Gardens, and anything from Cedar Creek Cannabis. “Cedar Creek, it’s always consistent. I love their OG Kush.”

“I tend to like indicas because I like to get stoned, and that’s what they do. Sometimes I also like indica-dominant hybrids.”

Customer support: “I love working with everyone. I can identify with anybody. If you treat everyone like a friend, you can really help them – and find them some great weed.”

Weirdest thing about you: “I have a newfound love for sushi. I lived in a small Oregon town most of my life and they didn’t have any sushi. I moved to Portland not long ago and tried it. I love it. And I love that Portland has so many options for sushi lovers.”

Where do you want to be in five years: “There is nothing else that I want to do in my career other than be in the legal marijuana industry. I could be working right here at the Herbery forever, and be just fine with that. I love budtending. It’s what I’ve always done and hope I always will do.”

Budtender Spotlight: Deanne Detrow

Name: Deanne Detrow

IMG_8389

From: North Carolina (She moved to the Pacific Northwest in 2014).

“My roommate was all ‘let’s move to the West Coast! So I did, and then she didn’t come with me! But I came, I stayed and I love it!”

Weed history: “I got the job here, actually. I didn’t smoke before then. Oh, I had a bowl here and there, but after I moved here – my aunt, who lives in the area, she’s a connoisseur – she brought me to the Herbery. When I came in I applied, and I got the job. I’ve learned so much more and I’m such a fan of cannabis now.”

Favorite strains: Blue Dream from Going Green, Lavender from pretty much any grower, Red Headed Stranger from Doc & Yeti. “I love Lavender right before I sleep. It just gets you perfectly ready for bed.”

Customer support: “I think they’re all so fantastic. The more questions the better. I love being able to teach people new things – the things I’ve learned. I tell people, I love to teach, but I don’t like kids, so this is perfect for me.”

Weirdest thing about you: “My hiccup sounds like a pterodactyl,”  Deanne said with a laugh. “Or maybe it sounds like a car breaking or a dog yelp. It’s been like that forever. I’ve actually gotten detention for it back in school because it’s so loud. Usually they don’t come continuously, so it ends up just being this random sound – and people say ‘what the hell was that??'”

Where do you want to be in five years: “I want to be in the industry, working, but I also want to go to school to be an interpreter for the deaf. I’m learning ASL and I love it.”

Budtender Spotlight: Christian Baker

Name: Christian Baker

IMG_8303

From: California (“I moved to the Pacific Northwest about 10 years ago with my family.”)

Weed history: “When I was in California there was a lot of peer pressure – I was almost 16 when I started. I got busted by my dad and we talked about it – and then we talked to a cop about it. My dad actually ended up smoking with me, and he still smokes. It really helps him with his back pain. It helps him a lot, and it makes me feel good too. It makes me feel loving to other people. It’s natural. It’s made from Mother Earth, and it’s meant to be consumed.”

Favorite strains: Christian loves sativas. Among his favorites are Super Lemon Haze from Going Green “They’re local and the Super Lemon Haze is by far one of the best;” Cinex from Phat Panda and Gorilla Glue from Cascadia Gardens.

Customer support: “I like talking to anyone. I also don’t mind difficult customers. I like talking to them and trying to make their day better. People are either high and in a good mood or they’re not high and they want to be high and in a good mood. I like to help them with that.”

Weirdest thing about you: “I have dreams about love and a united world where we’re all one.” To emphasize that, he got a heart tattoo across his forearms.

IMG_8301Christian was in a accident a few years ago and was knocked out, and when he came to, he said he just had an incredible sense of love.

“It was as if I was in the same body, same flesh, but my spirit was different. I started to feel love everywhere. And thoughts would appear in my mind that I should wake people up to love, unity and kindness.”

Where do you want to be in five years: “Someplace in the weed industry for sure. Now that I’m here at the Herbery I feel spoiled. I don’t want to do anything else. It’s a dream I didn’t even know I was having until I got here.”

Video Introduction:

Budtender Spotlight: Trevor

Name: Trevor

Trevor

From: San Francisco Bay area, California until he was 10 and then Idaho. Trevor moved to Vancouver about eight months ago with his brother. “My brother and I have been meaning to get out of Idaho for a while. I got two years probation there for a pipe! Also, there’s just not much to do there unless you’re a rancher or a farmer. So that’s actually why we moved here, not just because cannabis is legal.”

Weed history: “I’ve smoked since I was 12, but I wasn’t very educated about it until I came to work at The Herbery. I love Vancouver. It’s close enough to feel like you’re in civilization, but not so big that you feel swallowed by it.”

Favorite strains: Golden Pineapple from Phat Panda – “It’s a great high, but it also tastes like what it smells like and the buds are beautiful!” – Blackberry Kush from Victory Cannabis, Ewok from Cascadia Gardens and Chem Dawg from Cedar Creek Cannabis.

Customer support: “I like people who can keep up with my quirkiness. I love that fun back and forth with customers. I also just really enjoy helping people.”

Weirdest thing about you: “I collect Phat Panda stickers. I have one for pretty much every strain we’ve gotten in. I also love galaxy print things – if I see anything with the cosmos on it, like a shirt or sheets, I just have to get it because I love how it looks.”

Where do you want to be in five years: “I see a lot of growth going on, especially here at The Herbery. I could definitely see myself still working here in the future.”

IMG_7722

Name: Nick Svilarich

From: Camas (graduated from Camas High School)

Weed history: “I wasn’t super involved with cannabis prior to the legalization movement. I did smoke in the past, but it wasn’t a regular thing. After legalization I became a frequent customer at The Herbery and I decided I wanted to work here. It’s definitely exciting, fulfilling and involved.”

Favorite strains: Chem Dawg from Cedar Creek, Dutch Treat from Doc & Yeti, God’s Gift from Victory Cannabis.

Customer support: “I really like questions. I know this is an industry where people are sometimes reluctant to ask about products, but I want them to feel welcome. I like to stay well-informed so I can help them out.”

Weirdest thing about you: “I want to be a potter, making cups, jars and playing with mud. That’s my thing. I actually volunteer as a studio monitor so I can help other potters learn the craft.”

Where do you want to be in five years: “Hopefully I’ll still be in this industry. This is the place to be – things are kicking off and I think this will grow really well.”
